What is a cover-up exactly?
A cover-up is a new tattoo that overlays an existing one so the old design is no longer recognisable. It is not removal — the old ink stays in the skin and is visually overlaid with new colour and new shapes.
That is what sets a cover-up apart from a fresh tattoo on clear skin: the artist doesn't work on a blank area but has to deliberately plan around and mask the image underneath.
What is possible — and what isn't?
A lot can be covered, but there are physical limits. New ink layers over the old, it doesn't erase it. That is why the new design has to exceed the old one in saturation and area.
These points decide what is realistic:
- —Dark, bold old tattoos need an even darker, high-contrast new design
- —A cover-up is usually larger than the original tattoo to give enough area to mask it
- —Light, fine or colourful motifs over dark old work are barely feasible
- —Scars, blurred lines and the age of the ink affect the result
- —Not every desired motif fits over every old tattoo — sometimes a compromise is needed
Can laser lightening help?
Yes — if a dark old tattoo is partly lightened by laser beforehand, there is more creative freedom for the new design. The old tattoo doesn't have to be removed completely; a few sessions to lighten it are often enough.
Important: at Tattoo-Werk we don't do laser removal. That is handled by specialised providers. Whether pre-treatment makes sense is something we discuss honestly during the consultation — with strong old pieces it can noticeably improve the final result.
How does a cover-up work at Tattoo-Werk?
It always starts with an in-person consultation. The artist assesses the old tattoo directly on your skin — size, colour, age and any scars — and designs a fitting motif around it. This assessment matters especially for a cover-up, because a photo only partly shows the saturation and texture of the old ink.
You can send us a first impression on WhatsApp beforehand, but we only give the binding assessment once we've seen the tattoo live. We arrange appointments exclusively in person at Wagramer Straße 115.
Blast-over or true cover-up — what's the difference?
A true cover-up makes the old design disappear completely. A blast-over deliberately tattoos over the existing piece without hiding it — the old tattoo stays partly visible and becomes part of a new layered look.
Cover-ups are usually more involved than a new tattoo on clear skin and therefore mostly more expensive. How the price is made up is explained in our pricing guide. Which styles work well — such as blackwork or realism with strong contrast — you'll find in the article on tattoo styles.
