Is there a legal minimum age for tattooing in Austria?
There is no nationwide law in Austria that sets a specific minimum age solely for tattooing. Whether and from what age a studio tattoos is the studio's own responsibility and relates to a minor's capacity to consent.
Because a tattoo is permanent, many studios play it safe and set their own rules. The common practice: adults from 18 without further conditions, younger clients only under additional requirements — or not at all.
From what age do most studios tattoo?
Usually from 18, with no extra conditions. From that age you can give legally valid consent to a tattoo yourself.
Many studios do not tattoo minors at all. Others do so under certain conditions — how this is handled in each case varies from studio to studio and should be clarified in advance.
What applies if you are under 18?
If a studio tattoos minors (e.g. from 16) at all, it is usually only under strict conditions. Without them, no tattoo is done.
In such cases, studios typically require:
- —written consent from a legal guardian
- —the legal guardian's personal presence at the appointment
- —valid ID from you and the legal guardian
- —no sensitive areas or motifs (more on that below)
Which areas and motifs do studios decline for young clients?
Many studios avoid visible or sensitive areas for very young clients. These often include the face, neck and hands.
Certain motifs are also treated with caution. When in doubt, discuss your desired motif and placement directly during the consultation — then we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
